What is a consumer unit?

A consumer unit, also known as a fuse box or breaker box, is a device used in electrical wiring systems to distribute and control the electricity in a building. In the UK, it is a key component of the electrical installation in a home and is responsible for providing power to all the circuits in the building and protecting the electrical circuits from overloading.

A consumer unit typically contains a number of fuses or circuit breakers, which are used to control the flow of electricity to different circuits in the building. The fuses or circuit breakers will trip or blow if too much current flows through the circuit, preventing damage to the wiring or appliances.

The consumer unit also contains a main switch, which can be used to turn off the power to the entire building, and RCDs(Residual current device), which provide additional protection by detecting and breaking the circuit if an earth fault occurs.

It also includes indication lights that show when a circuit is in use, and a switch to turn off the power to the lighting circuits. Updating a consumer unit to a new one will include RCD protection and sometimes MCBs (Miniature Circuit Breakers) that provide a higher level of protection for individual circuits.

Why you need an electrician for your Consumer unit repairs and replacements

There are several problems that can happen with a consumer unit, and an electrician can help to diagnose and fix these issues:

  1. Blown fuses or tripped circuit breakers: This can occur if too much current is flowing through a circuit, causing the fuse or breaker to trip. An electrician can help to identify the cause of the problem and replace the fuse or reset the breaker.

  2. Loose connections: Over time, the connections in the consumer unit can become loose, which can lead to electrical problems. An electrician can check the connections and tighten or replace them as needed.

  3. Corrosion: Consumer units can become corroded over time, which can cause problems with the electrical system. An electrician can check for corrosion and clean or replace any corroded parts.

  4. Outdated consumer unit: Consumer units can become outdated and may not be able to handle the electrical load of a modern home. An electrician can advise on and carry out the replacement of the consumer unit with a new one that is more suitable to your home’s needs.

  5. RCD failure: RCDs are crucial in providing protection against electrical shock, and their failure can compromise the safety of the electrical installation. An electrician can check the RCDs and replace any that are not working properly.

  6. Overloading: Consumer units can be overloaded due to too many devices connected to the same circuit, causing the circuit breakers to trip frequently. An electrician can advise on how to redistribute the load or install additional circuits to avoid overloading.
